BJP’s Big Win in Delhi After 26 Years
The BJP secured a massive victory in Delhi after 26 years, winning 48 out of 70 seats in the February 8 elections. However, it took 11 days for the party to finalize the CM’s name, leading to criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
There was considerable speculation over who would be the next CM, with Parvesh Verma being a frontrunner. Verma, who is the son of former CM Sahib Singh Verma, made headlines by defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency.
Who is Rekha Gupta?
Rekha Gupta is set to become Delhi’s fourth female Chief Minister and currently the second woman CM in the country. She represents the Shalimar Bagh constituency, where she defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes.
- Rekha Gupta received 68,200 votes.
- Bandana Kumari secured 38,605 votes.
- Congress candidate Praveen Jain got only 4,892 votes.
Gupta is the National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha and hails from Jind, Haryana. She has a strong political background, having served as the Secretary and President of Delhi University Students’ Union. She was also elected as a Municipal Councillor from Pitampura in 2007 and 2012. However, she faced defeat in the last two Assembly elections before making a strong comeback this time.
With Rekha Gupta at the helm, all eyes are now on Delhi’s new government as they take charge of the capital’s future.
